McDonalds JSQ and Burger King McGinley

mcdonalds_soon_to_open1.jpg
McDonald’s. Photo taken a couple of days ago.

McDonald’s Journal Square moved just across the street and is now awaiting its official opening date. In the picture, you will see that the scaffoldings are now gone and the signs have been installed already. The franchise also has job openings, which are posted on the internet (mcnewjersey.com).

Streetview of Burger King (Montgomery St and Bergen Avenue, Jersey City)

Walking south (McGinley) along Bergen Avenue, you will find Burger King. This fastfood branch (also the MLK Branch) was reported “closing” last month because the operator couldn’t pay his debts. He was given until June 15 to settle everything or the two restaurants will be shut down. I guess he managed to pay off his debts in time, as this Burger King is still open.

If you have any updates, please feel free to post them in the comment section.

I’ll Be Back!

vacation.jpg

I will be out of the country for a “long” vacation starting Monday, July 7, and will be back August 29. JCRegister.com will still remain online, but the number of posts will decline noticeably as my online hours will be limited.

That being said, I am inviting everyone to write for this site. If you want to contribute: report a breaking news, rant, share your opinions, etc, feel free to send your writeup at info@jcregister.com. I will still check my email regularly, but just couldn’t do the things I normally do online.

If you want to post photos, include them in the email as attachments with short description.

There will be two scheduled posts after this so make sure to check them out. ;) In the meantime, I have a plane to catch, so I’m off for now.

See you all later!

JCRegister Weekly Summary

Welcome to JCRegister.com’s 21st Weekly Summary! How’s your 4th of July weekend going?

Before you enjoy the rest of the day, read on for the most interesting topics about Jersey City for this week (June 29-Jul 5, 2008) in no particular order:

TOP 6 POSTS

* JC 4th of July Celebration at Liberty State Park
Annual Celebration was highlighted by impressive fireworks. A week ago, across Hudson, there was a fireworks display in NY, prelude to July 4th. PATH anticipated increase of riders for the holiday so it added more trains to accomodate passengers.

* Philippine-American Friendship Day Festival Cut Short
Because of the storm that’s why. As a result, Filipino Idol Grand Finals will be rescheduled.

* Mugging at Walgreens Parking Lot.
This is the second time in a week after the failed carjacking at the same location. List this down in June crime stats!

* Wittpenn Closed for Two Consecutive Nights
The bridge that connects Kearny and Jersey City underwent construction.

* Bedbugs in JC!
Grandview Terrace infested with bedbugs! Tenants asked to shoulder extermination fees.

* Caven Point - Getting a New Field
Expected to finish by September 1st, in time for school.

HONORABLE MENTION

* Holly enjoyed her evening walk in the Heights
She’s an Events Professional in NY who has a big heart for volunteering. She photoblogged her night walk in the Heights, capturing the diverse community in the area.

* 100 Strangers Project: Tom of JSQ
I like this project a lot. Guy as in Gee and his wife met Tom of JSQ and treats him to lunch. Guy is another JC resident with a good heart, and is never afraid to meet strangers.

* JC Farmer’s Market and 440 Farms
Ian of New York’s Sixth blog lists summarizes JC’s Farmer’s Market. Meanwhile, a market in 440 also sells good produce (and fish weekly).

More Trains for the Holiday

July 4th is one of the busiest holidays highlighted by fireworks (we have one in Liberty State Park, Jersey City). According to JCReader, PATH will add trains in anticipation of increased ridership:

From JCReader:

“… additional trains will be added between 6pm and midnight to accommodate travelers headed into and out of the city for the New York fireworks display sponsored by Macy’s, in the East River…”

Caven Point Is Getting a New Field

caven_point_field.jpg

Jersey city’s Caven Point Field was shut down last April due to high level of lead. Reports said that City Council has awarded $1.3 million contract to J.A. Alexander, Inc. of Bloomfield to install a new synthetic field at the heavily used stadium.

Last month, the NFL donated $200 thousand for the replacement of the field, which is expected to finish by September 1st.

100 Strangers Project: Tom of JSQ

tom_jsq.jpgGuy is in Gee and his wife were in Journal Square a couple of weeks ago when they met Tom. Read his story about Tom below:

“As my wife and I killed time near Journal Square in Jersey City we came across Tom. He had this great big smile on his face. I said “hello’, and after a few pleasantries, Tom asked if we could spare some change so he could get something to eat. I said we would do better than that, we’d take him to a nearby Burger King and buy him a burger. He gladly accepted the offer, and on the way to BK he had second thoughts. “Would you mind if we went to Dunkin’ Donuts instead, I like their pizza”. No problem.

We went with Tom into Dunkin’ Donuts and he ordered pizza and coffee.

While we waited, Tom told us that he had just gotten out of the hospital and still was in a bit of pain, and had catheters hooked up to him. But he rarely stopped smiling.

Tom was born in Atlanta, and had moved to New Jersey when he was 6 months old.”

Tom is #30 in Guy’s 100 Strangers project, which is a photo challenge to take 100 portraits of total strangers according to its website. His other JC strangers — Enrique and Ben of Heights and Hamilton Park respectively — were also featured here.
